Episode 09: Picking Up the Pieces

Dean coughed, splattering blood against my chest, and grunted. “S-sorry…Angel,” he rasped.

“No, no, no, no, no.” I pressed my hand over his chest wound, closed my eyes and willed my angelic essence to make things right.

Everything Cassandra told me about falling in love, caring for people too much, getting too attached to anyone, was a constant barrage in my head I fought off with a frenzy of denial. If we—human beings or angels—were meant to do anything in this world, wasn’t love supposed to be at the top of that list? How could love be a weakness? How could something with such selfless intentions be wrong?

And though the pain in my heart was more than I could bear, although caring for someone who made such a sacrifice for my sake tore my soul apart and dared to prove Cassandra right, I refused to believe that love wasn’t worth the risk.
