Eliminating Writer’s Block

In honor of National Margarita Day, I’m celebrating being liberated from writer’s block!!!

Writer’s block…first there is the debate on whether or not it exists. Debate ended: It does. If it didn’t, it wouldn’t be the dreaded disease that plagues every writer on the planet. Those who have experienced it knows it prevents your creativity from flowing and brings your writing to a grinding halt. It’s not being lazy, it’s just misunderstanding what it really is. As writers, we all experience it at one time or another and we all know it’s the downside of being an author…or is it? Believe it or not, I believe I have found the cure for Writer’s Block!

What is Writer’s Block?

As a hypnotherapist AND a writer, I have come to understand that writer’s block is simply your conscious mind getting in the way of your creativity. In truth, your story ideas come from your subconscious mind…NOT your conscious mind. So, if that’s where they come from, then hypnosis can help you go directly to the source by shoving your critical and analytic conscious mind out of the way while you let your subconscious mind wax creative. 

Falling Down the Rabbit Hole

Using hypnosis, I’ve developed a number of techniques that allow you to do what I described above. These developed into workshops I call “Writing Workshops in Wonderland” – Wonderland being the subconscious mind. To be sure they worked, I applied them to my own writing, using them when I got stuck on my own stories or writing projects – and I’ve had amazing results. One particular experience was using the technique I use in my workshop titled “Falling Down the Rabbit Hole.”

In this guided meditation, I have my students/writers get to a safe place – usually a beach – where they experience relaxation and peace. Then, I transition them to a garden and they walk through a hedge maze where they come upon a large hole in the roots of a tree. Like Alice, they slowly fall down this hole, seeing and interacting with objects, items and even people on the journey down. These give writers clues they may or may not use in their actual story. When they reach the bottom of the hole, they find themselves in a room with a table and the DRINK ME potion, which they drink and shrink down to the perfect size to walk through a doorway. This doorway leads to a scene or place in their story where they find the answer they seek to solve their current writing problem and resolve the writer’s block. It’s quite an adventure and fun to see what the subconscious mind reveals about your story or characters!

YOU Can Fall Down the Rabbit Hole, Too!

So what are the steps?

  1. Go someplace where you will not be disturbed and can relax – such as your bedroom, or living room. The important thing is you do not want to be disturbed. Inform members in your household that you need anywhere from 15-30 minutes of quiet time.
  2. Have your goal in mind (Example: “I’m going to go to my beach to relax and there I will find a door. When I walk through that door, I will step into a scene in my book and one or more of my characters will be there to give me the exact answer I need to resolve this problem in my story.”). Having your goal in mind with an overall understanding of what you’re going to do prepares your subconscious to have the answers waiting for you when you get there.
  3. Relax! Just sit or lay down, take a few deep and comfortable breaths, and imagine yourself in a soothing scene, like a beach or a forest or a meadow (or whatever). Proceed once you “see” yourself in that setting and you feel relaxed.
  4. Now make the transition to your scene or situation as described in step 2. As the example stated, you should look for that door you want to step through.
  5. DON’T EDIT…just let the situation unfold and go with it. Remember, your subconscious already has the answer. If you get frustrated, its a sign your conscious mind is getting in the way. Relax and then continue with the trance.
  6. Explore and experience. You’ll be surprised what images or experiences your subconscious comes up with when you enter the realm of your imagination. You can talk to your characters, ask them questions, or if no one is there, you can explore the scene you’ve walked into. Once you have your answer, you can either go back to your peaceful place or you can just open your eyes.
  7. WRITE IT DOWN!
